Bringing Sweet Memories To Massachusetts Since 1960
For more than 66 years, Mel’s Ice Cream has been bringing smiles to neighborhoods, schools, beaches, parks, community events, and family celebrations throughout Massachusetts. What began as one man’s idea to make life a little sweeter has grown into one of the South Shore’s most recognized family-owned ice cream businesses.
The story began with our founder, Melvin Gould, who worked as a correctional officer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for 30 years while also operating a small egg business. During the 1950s and early 1970s, Melvin raised over 5,000 chickens and spent countless hours driving throughout the region delivering fresh eggs to local customers.
While making those deliveries, he noticed something that would change his life forever. Everywhere he traveled, there were children playing outside, and he realized every neighborhood could use something special. In 1960, he purchased his very first Mr. Softee ice cream truck, beginning a journey that would create smiles for generations of families.
By 1962, the business had expanded to three soft serve trucks. As the company continued to grow, Melvin recognized the popularity of novelty ice cream products and added two novelty trucks in 1972. Their success led him to purchase six more novelty trucks just one year later, laying the foundation for what Mel’s Ice Cream has become today.
- Why Choose Us
Why Families Continue Choosing Mel's Ice Cream
For Randy Gould, this business has never been just about selling ice cream.
After returning from Florida in 1988 for what he thought would be a single summer job, he discovered a career he truly loved. More than 38 years later, he still enjoys driving his routes and greeting families by name.
Many of the neighborhoods we serve today have been part of our routes for decades, with some routes continuing for more than 66 years. We believe our customers aren’t just customers, they’re friends, neighbors, and part of the Mel’s Ice Cream family.
Our motto says it best:
Ice Cream Men Are Cool
More Than Ice Cream
What started with one truck has grown into a fleet serving neighborhoods, schools, corporate events, birthday parties, weddings, festivals, town celebrations, sporting events, and private gatherings throughout Massachusetts.
Our trucks carry more than 140 frozen treats and refreshments, including over 80 ice cream flavors, novelty bars, popsicles, ice cream sandwiches, slush, soda, candy, and chips from trusted brands including Blue Bunny, Breyers, and Hood.
Whether you’re planning an event or simply waiting for the familiar sound of our truck in your neighborhood, we’re committed to delivering quality products, friendly service, and
unforgettable memories.
- Our Team
A Family Tradition That Continues Today
Mel’s Ice Cream has always been a family business.
Current owner Randy Gould began working in the family business when he was just 10 years old, helping with shipping and receiving before eventually driving his own ice cream truck at age 18. After gaining experience, Randy returned at age 22 and purchased his own truck, creating a small fleet under the name R.A.D. Ice Cream.
When Melvin Gould passed away in 2000, Randy proudly purchased the original family fleet, combining both businesses into what is now Mel’s Ice Cream’s fleet of 11 ice cream trucks serving communities throughout the South Shore of Massachusetts.
Today, the tradition continues with Randy’s children and grandchildren helping with different parts of the business, making Mel’s Ice Cream a true third-generation family company.

We've had Mel's truck at our neighborhood block party every August for probably ten years now. The kids know the jingle before they even see the truck. It's honestly one of the things that makes summer feel like summer around here.

Booked them for my son's graduation party last minute and they still made it work. Truck showed up early, staff was so patient with 40 kids running around, and I didn't have to worry about a single thing. Would book again in a heartbeat.

I grew up chasing this truck down the street as a kid in the 90s, and now I'm the one waving it down for my own daughter. There's something really special about a business that's stuck around long enough to do that.

We use Mel's for our office summer kickoff every year. Easy to book, they show up on time, and honestly it's the one event nobody ever skips. Great way to boost morale without much effort on our end.

Called them for a last-minute birthday and they had a great menu of options for my son's peanut allergy without making it a whole thing. Small stuff like that goes a long way.
